Ceiling Fan Installation Cost (With & Without Existing Wiring)

Here's the honest version: if you're replacing a fan (or a light fixture) where there's already a fan-rated box and wiring, installation is quick and affordable. If there's no wiring or box up there, it's a much bigger job. That one detail is the difference between a $129 visit and a several-hundred-dollar project.

The two very different scenarios

ScenarioWhat's involvedTypical cost
Existing fan/box, swap it outRemove old, mount new, wire, balance~$129
Light fixture → fan (box not fan-rated)Swap to a fan-rated box + fanmore, quoted
No existing wiring/boxRun wiring, add box & switch$350 – $2,000+

The box is the safety part everyone skips

A fan spins and vibrates, so it must hang from a fan-rated electrical box — not the light box that came with the house. A lot of DIY fan wobble (and the scary stories) come from a fan bolted to a box that was never meant to hold it. When we swap a light for a fan, checking and upgrading that box is step one.

Why fans earn their keep in Florida

In our climate a good ceiling fan takes real load off the AC — moving air lets you set the thermostat a couple degrees higher and still feel comfortable, which shows up on the FPL bill. On covered patios and lanais, use an outdoor/damp-rated fan; a standard indoor fan won't last in our humidity.

What we handle

  • Take down the old fixture safely (power off, tested).
  • Confirm or install a fan-rated box.
  • Assemble, mount, wire, and balance the fan so it runs quiet.
  • Set up the remote or wall control and clean up.

If you're upgrading your ceiling while the ladder is out, swapping a light fixture in the same room takes another 20 minutes. Also see our guide on bathroom exhaust fan replacement — South Florida's humidity makes that an equally important upgrade.
